Community Service

SDBTA 2011 Philanthropy Partner

In 2011, the San Diego Business Travel Association is partnering with the San Diego Food Bank. Established in 1977, the San Diego Food Bank is a critical component to the welfare of San Diego County, providing food to people in need, advocating for the hungry and educating the public about hunger-related issues. Funded by founda tions, grants, the USDA, corporations, sponsors and individual donors, the Food Bank distributes over 15 million pounds of food annually to individuals, families and a network of nonprofit organizations that work to alleviate hunger throughout the county.

Did you know?

Of the 3.1 million residents in San Diego County over 483,000 people live at or near the federal poverty level and face the threat of hunger. 273,000 are children. Hunger or "food insecurity" means households face times when they do not know if they will have enough food, or do not know how they will get their next meal.

  • 48 percent of people served by the Food Bank are under the age of 18.
  • 16 percent are children ages five years and younger.
  • 22 percent are senior citizens.
  • 50 percent of households served have at least one adult employed in a low-income job.

Proceeds from our opportunity drawing ticket sales and funds raised in our annual gala go towards supporting the San Diego Food Bank.  Make sure to buy your tickets!

In 2010, SDBTA was able to donate $7,500 to the San Diego Food Bank's "Food 4 Kids Backpack Program".  This program provides food to chronically hungry elementary school students from low-income households who are at risk of hunger over the weekend when free school meals are unavailable.  Thank you!

Coming Soon!

Stay tuned for some exciting volunteer opportunities with the San Diego Food Bank
